Funya no Watamaro was born in 765.
In the Kusuko Fujiwara Affair (810), Funya-no-Watamaro took the side of ex-Emperor Heizei and was arrested. Tamuramaro Sakanoue, noted warrior, loath to lose such a gifted soldier, asked for and obtained Emperor Saga pardon and employed him in a military post. Later Watamaro was appointed commander-in-chief of a punitive expedition to northeastern Japan (813). He successfully brought the Ainus under control and restored order in that part of the country. Was appointed Chunagon (Vice-Minisster).
