Furuichi Sumitane was born about 1570.
Furuichi Sumitane was originally in the service of Shogun Yoshiaki Ashikaga and was created Harima-no-kami and granted a fief of 20,000 koku of rice at Furuichi, Nara Prefecture. Later he entered Kofukuji Temple in Nara and mastered the art of tea ceremony from Shuko and went on to found the Furuichi school of tea ceremony. Was also skilled in waka poetry and renga (poetic dialogues). His pen-name was Enjobo.
