Furushima Toshio was born in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture in 1912.
He graduated from Tokyo University in 1936. Was a leading student on the history of Japan’s agriculture and the history of agricultural theory.
Furushima Toshio served as instructor of Tokyo University, and appointed assistant professor (1948). Has announced a number of researches supported by factual materials. Received the Agricultural Prize from the Japan Agricultural Academy for the first volume of the Japanese Agricultural History, and the Mainichi Publication and Culture Prize for the History of Japanese Agricultural Techniques. Has studies on the system of absent landowners in the latter Middle Age and his research work “Commodity Production and Absent Landlord System“ caused a subject of big debate in relation to the history of the end of the Shogunate Rule and the beginning of the Meiji Restoration.
