Futabashi Ken was born in Iwate Prefecture. Date of birth is unknown.
From 1897 until 1902 Futabashi Ken was trade secretary at Vladivostok. In those years, fisheries were developed along the Maritime Province of Russia and friction arose between Russia and Japan in connection with their fishing grounds. Russia legislated a complicated law to curb Japanese fishery activities, causing trouble among the Japanese fishery interests. Futabashi was chiefly responsible for the withdrawal of that law by Russia. An expert in the Russian language, he wrote a Japanese-Russian dictionary.
He was the son-in-law of Takeaki Enomoto.
