Background

Gad Freudenthal was born on October 27, 1944 in Jerusalem, Yerushalayim, Israel, in the family of Heinz and Renate (Engel) Freudenthal.

Education

Gad studied at the Hebrew University-first mathematics and physics, later also history and philosophy of science. He left Israel in the mid-1970s and settled in France, where he obtained his Ph.D.

Career

In 1982 Gad was recruited to the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, where he researched notably the history of medieval science and philosophy in Jewish cultures, highlighting their relationships to the majority cultures (Muslim and Christian). In 2005 he was visiting Horace W. Goldsmith Professor in Judaic Studies/History at Yale University.

Achievements

• Gad is famous for his being the author of Aristotle’s Theory of Material Substance: Form and Soul, Heat and Pneuma and the editor of Studies on Gersonides-A Fourteenth-Century Jewish Philosopher-Scientist and AIDS in Jewish Thought and Law.
