Gemma Whelan is an English actress, comedienne, and dancer. She is better known as Yara Greyjoy from the popular adventure fantasy fiction series, Game of Thrones.

Gemma Elizabeth Whelan was born on April 23, 1981, in Leeds to a British family.

Education

Whelan attended The King's High School for Girls in Warwick. Whelan is a trained dancer. Her specialties are in tap dance and jazz dance. When she was young, she almost joined the Royal Ballet School. But finding herself attracted to more dramatic roles, she pursued acting instead.

The actress is also trained in musical theatre and has a mezzo-soprano singing voice. She was also involved with the Beaux Belles dance troupe.

Career

Whelan has had roles in films including The Wolfman (2010), Gulliver's Travels (2010), Prevenge (2010). Among TV series, she has portrayed roles in The Persuasionists (2010), Threesome (2011), Game of Thrones (2012-2019), Live at the Electric (2014), Almost Royal (2014-2016), Uncle and The Agency.

Since 2014, Gemma Whelan is seen in Upstart Crow (2016- 2018), Horrible Histories (2016-present), among others. She is also a theatre actress and has worked in Newsrevue (2005), Red Death Lates (2008), One Man, Two Guvnors (2013), Dark Vanilla Jungle (2014), Surviving Christmas With The Relatives (2018).

The actress has also lent her voice to video games such as Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward (2015), Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017), Squadron 42.

As a comedian, Whelan won the Funny Women Variety Award for stand-up comedy in 2010. She often performs stand-up in character as Chastity Butterworth and in 2014 she recorded a pilot chat show for BBC Radio 4 called The Chastity Butterworth Show.
