He graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Voronezh State University in 1970.
He worked as an assembly fitter at Voronezh Electromechanical Plant (1960-1962), served in the Soviet Army (1962-1965). He was a teacher of Russian language and literature in Yakutia (1970-1973). He was a lecturer at the preparatory faculty of the Voronezh State University (1973-1975). He was a lecturer from 1975 till1981, Associate Professor, Professor of the Faculty of Philology of Voronezh State University beginning from 1985, Head of the Department of Slavic Philology from 1991, methodologist of the Warsaw branch of The A.S. Pushkin State Russian Language Institute and The Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1981-1985).
