After his brother Tamotsu joined the religious forces led by Takauji Ashikaga, he parted from Tamotsu and attempted to rally loyalist forces at Somayama (Fukui Prefecture) along with his brother-in-law Yoshiakiand Yoshiharu Wakiya in 1336. His elder brother later changed his mind, and reunited with Genrin. For a time, his loyalist force were successful. The following spring, his troops numbering 5,000 attacked Kanagaeaki (Fukui Prefecture), encountering with the overwhelming army of Yorisada Imagawa. After all his efforts, however, Yoshiaki was killed in action and his loyalist forces retreated. Genrin was thus obliged to return in defeat to Somayama. Genrin Uryu was subsequently joined by the loyalist forces under the leadership of Yoshisada and Yoshisuke Nitta, but their numerical strength stood only at less than 500 as against the enemy's 100,000. In the meantime the Kanagasaki Castle, the last citadel of loyalist forces, was captured by the enemy. What became of him thereafter is unknown.
