Career
He was chancellor of McMaster University from 1941 to 1949, serving under the title of president and vice-chancellor. He retired in 1961. Gilmour Hall, the office of the registrar at McMaster University, is named after him. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, he received three degrees from McMaster and did post-graduate work at Oxford and Yale.
He was named citizen of the year by the City of Hamilton in 1950.
Gilmour received eight honorary degrees.
