George Nicholas, American state official. Served as major 2d Virginia Regiment, 1777, later colonel; member Virginia House of Delegates, 1787; member Virginia Convention which ratified United States Constitution, 1788; member 1st Kentucky Constitutional Convention, 1792.

Background

Nicholas, George was born in 1755 in Williamsburg, Virginia, United States. Son of Robert Carter and Anne (Cary) Nicholas.

Education

Graduated from College William and Mary, 1772.

Career

Served as major 2d Virginia Regiment, 1777, later colonel. Member Virginia House of Delegates, 1787. Member Virginia Convention which ratified United States Constitution, 1788.

Member 1st Kentucky Constitutional Convention, 1792. 1st attorney general Kentucky. Helped to frame, advocate Thomas Jefferson’s Kentucky Resolutions of 1798 in response to Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798.
