George Hamley Odell was born on April 17, 1942, in Minneapolis. He was a son of Allan Gilbert Odell, president of the company that manufactured Burma-Shave brushless shaving cream, and Grace Odell (maiden name Evans), a homemaker.
George Hamley Odell received his Bachelor of Arts in 1964 from Yale University. It was followed by a Master of Arts in Teaching the next year.
Later, in 1977, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Harvard University.
George H. Odell started his career as a teacher of English at the International College, Beirut, Lebanon from 1965 to 1966. Then, he joined the professor’s staff of Institut Montana Zugerberg, Switzerland where he lectured on social studies for a couple of years.
Before becoming a professor at the anthropology department of the University of Tulsa in 1984, Odell worked as an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia, Brown University in Providence, and headed the lithics laboratory of the Center for American Archaeology, Kampsville from 1979.
The author took part at the Southeastern Archaeological Conference and was a member of the Oklahoma Archaeological Survey.
Throughout his career, Odell was in charge of excavations and surveys in the Netherlands, South Africa, the territory of former Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria, France, and multiple sites around the United States.
In addition to book publications, he also contributed articles to various periodicals, including Lithic Technology, American Antiquity, and the Journal of Field Archaeology.

1989George H. Odell was a member of the Society for American Archaeology, the American Anthropological Association, the Society of Professional Archaeologists, Société Préhistorique Française, Oklahoma Anthropological Society, Kansas Archaeological Society, the Arkansas Archaeological Society, and Tulsa Archaeological Society.
According to George H. Odell’s colleague at the University of Tulsa, Professor Michael Whalen, Odell was an avid and innovative specialist and educator who did his best to develop a local archaeology program, including through the contacts with state and national professional societies. Whalen characterized him as “cheerful, optimistic and hardworking, and a deeply moral man who always tried to do the right thing.”
George H. Odell married Frieda Vereecken, a language instructor, on July 4, 1975.
