Entered Midland Railway service as a clerk, at 15 years of age, at Keighley, and continued in that service until March 1S9S, when was appointed Editor of Railway Review, as successor to Mr. Maddison, ex-Member of Parliament for Brightside. Edited Keighley Labour Journal, 1893-1897.
Keen student of social questions. Wrote and spoke on these for several years, prior to coining to London. Cooperator, Trade Unionist, Socialist. Member of Parliament (Labourist) Stockport since 1906; Editor Kailway Review.
