Getty, George Washington was born on October 2, 1819 in Georgetown, District of Columbia. Son of Robert and Margaret (Wilmot) Getty.
Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1840.
Commissioned Second lieutenant, 4th Artillery, United States Army, 1840, First lieutenant, 1845. Served at battles of Contreras, Churubusco, Molino del Rey, Chapultepec during Mexican War. Brevetted captain, 1847.
Served in wars against Seminole Indians, 1849-1850, 56-57. Promoted captain, 1853, lieutenant colonel, 1861. Served in Peninsular campaign, battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, also Wilderness and Shenandoah campaigns.
Appointed brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1862. Commissioned major United States rmy, 1863, colonel, 1866. Commanded post and artillery school, Fort Monroe, 1871-1877.
Led troops in suppressing riots along B. & O. R.R., 1877. Retired, 1883.
