Began writing as a poet, 1916. At first close to the Acmeists. Emigrated after the October Revolution.
Settled in Paris, became one of the most influential literary critics in the Russian emigre press between the world wars. Main supporter of the so-called Parizhskaia Nota in Russian 20th century poetry, based on Part pour Part principles. Had famous literary feuds with Tsvetaeva and Nabokov.
After World War II, gave lectures on Russian literature at Manchester University and broadcast talks on Radio Liberty in Munich. Wrote a biography of V. Maklakov.
