Gerard T. Koeppel was born on November 14, 1957, in New York City, New York, United States.
In 1979, Gerard received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University, where V. S. Naipaul and Phyllis Rose were his mentors.
Gerard started writing, when he was a student of Wesleyan University. He wrote for the student paper and at a non-fiction writing seminar with V. S. Naipaul. After finishing the university, Gerard was the captain of a charter sailboat. Then, for many years, Koeppel served as a radio reporter, writer, editor and producer, mostly with CBS News in New York City.
Gerard wrote three books, such as "Water for Gotham: A History" (2000), "Bond of Union: Building the Erie Canal and the American Empire" (2009) and "City on a Grid: How New York Became New York" (2015). In addition, he contributed to numerous other books, including "The Encyclopedia of New York City" (1995), of which he was an associate editor, namely of the second edition. Moreover, Koeppel has written opinion pieces for different print and online publications, including the New York Times and the New York Daily News.
