Gerhard Kopf was born on September 19, 1948 in Pfronten, Germany; the son of Johann Kopf, a village mail carrier, and Josephine Kopf.
Gerhard Kopf graduated from high school in Füssen. He received a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Munich and attended the University of Duisburg.
In 1984, Gerhard Kopf was appointed as a Professor of Contemporary and Applied Literature at the University of Duisburg, where he worked until 2003.
Since 2000, he has increasingly turned to medicine. Kopf became a visiting professor at the psychiatric clinic of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and external lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry at the Technical University of Munich, with a focus on psychopathology in language and literature.
In addition, Kopf writes radio plays. He is also a contributor to newspapers and magazines. Gerhard plays supporting roles in movies and theater, as for example in 2017 at the Munich Kammerspiele No-Theater.
