He engaged in many social relief works, in recognition of which he was picked for the post of a magistrate of the clan. After the Restoration in 1868, he served in the Imperial Government as Postmaster General. He then became president of the Wakayama Prefectural Assembly. In 1884, he visited the United States and died of illness in New York the following year.
