My first few years of research were mainly in the
field of pure trade theory, particularly with reference to protectionism. I soon felt, however, that the HeckscherOhlin-Samuelson paradigm was subject to rapidly decreasing returns to research efforts, or at least to mine. I then moved my interests to the theory and policy of balance of payments and exchange rate determination.
In between, however, particularly during the early 1970s, I was heavily involved in building a large econometric model for Italy within Project LINK directed by Lawrence Klein at the University of Pennsylvania. At present my interests go beyond both the real and monetary theory of international economics. I am currently working on the stability characteristics of economies burdened by large public and foreign debt.
While my best-known publications probably remain the first ones connected with the theory of effective protection, I feel that the problems I am dealing with at present are more interesting and may lead me to some positive contribution.
