In 1909 worked with the newspaper Kopeika (which became Izvestia after the 1917 Revolution). In the 1910s worked for one of the largest newspapers, Russkoe Slovo. Front correspondent during World War I, twice wounded.
After the 1917 Revolution, emigrated, travelled in the Balkans, served as a sailor on a British ship, settled on a Dalmatian island. Moved to Berlin. 1922. Wrote novels and became known as a writer.
Suddenly returned to the Soviet Union, November 1923. Allowed to publish new works in the Soviet Union in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Close to the influential Cheka official, Agranov.
Arrested during the Stalin purges, perished in the Gulag, circumstances of death unknown.
