Gustav Frenssen was born on October 19, 1863, in the small village of Barlt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
He was educated at the universities of Tübingen, Berlin and Kiel. He took orders and from 1892 to 1902 was pastor at Hemme, taking his degree as doctor of theology at Heidelberg in 1903.
Frenssen served as pastor in two Holstein villages from 1890 to his resignation in 1902. In his sermons and later novels, Hilligenlei (1905) (Holyland, 1906) and Der Pastor von Poggsee (1921), he advocated an undogmatic religion which would not stunt life. His novels were much discussed, and his Jörn Uhl (1901) skyrocketed him to fame.
Frenssen found the subjects of his novels in his native province, which he described with realism, sentimentality, patriotism, and a love tempered with criticism. His deliberately moral and political message partly accounts for the popularity of the novelist. Frenssen also wrote short stories, plays, a verse epic about Bismarck (1914), and three volumes of observations and reflections (Grübeleien, 1919-1937).
He published popular histories of his native village and of Germany. His political observations lend interest to letters that he wrote during a trip through the United States in 1922 (Briefe aus Amerika, 1924). In 1940 he wrote a passionate defense of Germany's role in World War II: Recht oder Unrecht--mein Land, with the words "oder Unrecht" ("or wrong") crossed out.
