Loiseau was born in Paris, France, on October 3, 1865. His parents owned a butcher shop.
Gustave told his parents about his desire to become an artist. His parents soon sold their business and retired to Pontoise. In the year 1887, Gustave Loiseau received a legacy from his grandmother, which allowed him to concentrate on painting. He enrolled in the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs where he studied life-drawing. But the following year he left the school because of an argument with his teacher. He then invited the landscape painter Fernand Just Quignon to tutor him in painting. However, he was disappointed by both his approach and his methods. He felt that Quignon's process of painting lacked spontaneity, freshness and intensity.
Loiseau went to Pont-Aven for the first time in May of 1890. There he rented a room in the cheapest pension in the village. It was at the Pension Gloanec that Gustav Loiseau met the artists Maxime Maufra and Henry Moret. He and Maufra had much in common and quickly became friends.
After his experimenting with Pointillism, Gustav Loiseau adopted his own approach to Post-Impressionism, painting landscapes directly from nature. Both Moret and Maufra convinced Loiseau to present his works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1891 and 1892. In 1891, Maxime Maufra introduced Loiseau to Le Barc de Boutteville, who was an art dealer in the rue Le Pelletier in Paris and supporter of young artists.
After spending the summer of 1894 in Brittany, Loiseau returned to Paris and contacted Paul Durand-Ruel, the prestigious Paris art dealer who represented Claude Monet and was the leading art dealer of the Impressionists. Durand-Ruel started to handle Loiseau's work in 1894, the year when he ceased his exhibiting at Le Barc de Boutteville. Gustav Loiseau's connection with Durand-Ruel enabled him to travel more extensively and discover the regions and subjects that would inspire him for the rest of his career.
In the spring of 1895, Loiseau moved to Moret-sur-Loing. Starting from that time, Gustav Loiseau became one of the most sincere interpreters of the French landscape. He travelled through Normandy, Brittany, and the Dordogne in summer, returning to the Île-de-France each winter.
Gustav Loiseau produced many of his works in Pontoise. In 1904, he worked in a fine studio, which was built in his garden there. A number of his canvases during this period depicted the views from his studio. After the year 1899, he also often painted in Saint-Cyr-du-Vaudreuil on the banks of the Eure. Moreover, he visited Saint-Herbot and Le Huelgoat in 1903, Cap Fréhel in 1905 and 1906 and Douarnenez-Tréboul in 1913.
The painter's technique changed during the 1910s, which later became his speciality. From the 1920s, he painted many still-lifes. In his later years, he divided his time between his studio in Pontoise and a new studio in Paris. Loiseau created a series of artworks of the capital city.
From the late 19th century, Gustav Loiseau enjoyed a great international success, with patrons both in the United States and in Europe collecting his work. Loiseau's paintings were represented in public and private collections, and important galleries in Paris, the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
