He received his early education at the Kasen School in Sakai.
Little is known of him after he left school except that he lived a bohemian life for a while then became a teacher.
His literary career began in 1889 with the publication of his novel Santo-no-hana (Flowers of Three Cities). In 1891 he joined the editorial staff of the Miyako Shimbun at Tokyo, then the Kaishin Shimbun and finally ended up as the fiction editor for the Asahi Shimbun. He has written several books and was also adept at writing Chinese poetry.
