Diehl was born on March 2, 1923 in York, Pennsylvania, United States; the son of Ralph Eugene Diehl and Anna (Danner) Diehl.
Diehl received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gettysburg College in 1948. Three years later he earned his Master of Science degree from Pennsylvania State University. Also in 1976, Harry was given a Master of Education degree from the University of Delaware.
Diehl served as a sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1941 to 1946. He began his career as a teacher of chemistry at William Penn Senior High School in 1948. Three years later he became a chemist at DuPont Chambers Works, where he worked until 1983. Harry taught evening courses on the genealogy and was a professional genealogist who helped people find their roots.
Diehl was a member of Pennsylvania Genealogy Society, Delaware Genealogy Society (president, 1981-1982), South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society (president, 1992-1993), Maryland Genealogy Society and Circle Four Square Dance Club.
On June 28, 1945 Harry Diehl married Margaret Marie (Ehrhart) Diehl. They have four children, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
