He was born Henry Vincent Yorke on Oct. 29, 1905, at Forthampton Court, Gloucestershire.
Green left Oxford without completing his studies. Later he admitted the reason for this decision was an intrusive sense of guilt before people whose job was connected with physical work. Eventually, the sense forced him to work as a foundry worker for his father’s factory.
Educated at Eton and Oxford, he worked in the family engineering business at Birmingham, of which he became managing director. He served throughout World War II as a fireman in London.
Green stopped writing after 1952, giving as his reason that he could see no more point in it.
Politically, Green was a traditional Tory throughout his life.
