Background
Hotta was born in 1632. Lord of Sakura in Shimo-osa Province (Chiba Prefecture). Eldest son of Masamori.

Career
In 1660, he criticized mis- administrations of the Shogunate, begRed that he be permitted to offer his territory for distribution among his retainers and returned to Sakura from Edo without Sho- gunate permission. For this deed, he was exiled to Obama (Fukui Prefecture). He stole into Kyoto in 1675 but was soon found out and exiled to Sumoto on Awaji Island in the Inland Sea. Killed himself there.
