( In the ongoing search for causes for schizophrenia, foc...)
In the ongoing search for causes for schizophrenia, focus on the harmful effects of critical or rejecting family members and deviant communication patterns has obscured the potentially beneficial role of many families in providing support for their schizophrenic relatives. Falloon and his colleagues have developed a model for the broad-based community treatment of schizophrenia and other severe forms of mental illness that taps this underutilized potential. Their exposition of the family care model, coupled with case studies and results from a controlled outcome study, reveal the family to be an important resource in the community management of mental illness.

This challenging book describes a new approach to the provision of mental health service to a community. Taking as their theoretical basis the vulnerability-stress model of mental illness, the authors place their findings and recommendations in the wider context of mental health care provision, and draw widely on international research in this field. They insist on a rigorous approach to the provision and evaluation of care, and use telling case studies to reveal the benefits as well as some of the difficulties that may be experienced. The practical, problem-solving and cost effective approach described in this book will be of the greatest interest to health care professionals in whatever treatment setting they may be working.

("Managing Stress in Families" deals with the treatment of...)
"Managing Stress in Families" deals with the treatment of major mental disorders in the community. The authors provide a rationale for the use of stress management approaches, and describe in detail the methods employed in the application of such strategies in practice. They show what therapist skills are required in order to employ these interventions, and engage all members of a household in treatment. The authors have long experience in working with families in community settings, and particular expertise in the more severe anxiety disorders. Their material is based on research drawn from a wide variety of areas, from schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease, to childhood conduct disorders and autism. Individual chapters deal with issues such as education of family members, communication skills, how to help individuals work towards their own goals in life, and what to do in a crisis situation. The step-by-step descriptions of strategies and techniques provide a clear picture of practice in therapy sessions. Also included are copies of assessment interviews and an annotated bibliography of educational handbooks, as well as case studies.
