In 1963 he entered the camera faculty of VGIK, where he studied in the studio of L. V. Kosmatova. In VGIK Klebanov studied at the same time with Nikita Mikhalkov, and it was Klebanov who was the operator of Mikhalkov's first etude "Girl and Things" (1967) and then a diploma "And I'm leaving home ...".
After graduating from VGIK in 1968, Igor Klebanov started working at the M. Gorky film studio and soon became one of the leading operators of this film studio. Igor Klebanov has shot more than thirty films.
As a director and an operator, he also works in the genre of a music video (including "We will not catch up" with the "Tatu" group) and advertising.
Since 1989, Igor Klebanov has been teaching at VGIK, Professor of the Department of Cinematography (2003). From 1989 to 1994 he directed the Experimental Workshop of filmmakers and film and video filmmakers.
Since 1996 he is the president of the Guild of Cinematographers of Russia. Member of R.G.C. in IMAGO.
