Ilya Davydovich Feranchuk is a Belarusian theoretical physicist, professor, educator, and researcher at Belarusian State University. He is known for work on parametric X-ray radiation, coherent radiation in crystals, non-perturbative quantum methods, and the interaction of radiation with matter.
Background
Ilya Davydovich Feranchuk was born on 14 July 1946 in Minsk. He has pursued his scientific and academic career in Belarus, chiefly at Belarusian State University, where he developed from a specialist in nuclear physics into a professor and leading researcher in theoretical physics.
Education
Feranchuk entered the Faculty of Physics of Belarusian State University in 1964 and graduated in 1969 with a specialization in nuclear physics. He subsequently pursued advanced research in theoretical physics, defending a candidate dissertation in 1975 on the radiation of ultrarelativistic electrons in crystals and a doctoral dissertation in 1985 on coherent phenomena in the X-ray and gamma radiation of relativistic charged particles in crystals. He received the academic rank of associate professor in 1982 and became a professor in 1986.
Career
Feranchuk began his professional career at Belarusian State University as an engineer in the Department of Nuclear Physics from 1968 to 1971. From 1971 to 1974 he worked as a junior researcher at the Institute of Applied Physical Problems of Belarusian State University. In 1974 he joined the Department of Theoretical Physics as a senior lecturer and later advanced through academic positions to professor, a rank he has held since 1986. From 2004 to 2018 he headed the Department of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics. His research has focused on parametric X-ray radiation, coherent bremsstrahlung, X-ray diffraction and scattering in crystals and nanostructures, non-perturbative methods in quantum theory, quantum statistics, quantum field theory, and the interaction of charged particles and electromagnetic radiation with matter. Together with Vladimir Baryshevsky, he helped predict and develop the theory of parametric X-ray radiation and investigated its use in crystallography and tunable X-ray sources. He has published hundreds of scientific works, authored or co-authored monographs, edited conference proceedings, and supervised doctoral researchers, including twenty candidate dissertations and one doctoral dissertation.
Achievements
Together with Vladimir Baryshevsky, helped predict and develop the theory of parametric X-ray radiation produced by charged particles moving through crystals.
Developed theoretical methods for analyzing coherent X-ray radiation, coherent bremsstrahlung, X-ray diffraction, and scattering in crystals, multilayers, superlattices, and nanostructures.
Obtained fundamental results using operator and non-perturbative methods for quantum systems with many degrees of freedom and for problems in quantum statistics and quantum field theory.
Authored or co-authored hundreds of scientific publications and several monographs, including works published by Springer.
Supervised the successful defense of twenty candidate dissertations and one doctoral dissertation.
