Mikhail Yakovlevich Kovalyov is a Belarusian mathematician, computer scientist, and researcher in operations research. A professor and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, he is known for work on discrete optimization, scheduling theory, logistics, approximation algorithms, computational complexity, and bioinformatics.
Background
Mikhail Yakovlevich Kovalyov was born on November 28, 1959, in the settlement of Godylevo in Bykhaw District, Mogilev Region, Belarus. He completed his secondary education in Godylevo in 1977 with a gold medal before entering Belarusian State University. His early academic formation led to a career centered on applied mathematics, mathematical cybernetics, and operations research.
Education
Kovalyov graduated from the Faculty of Applied Mathematics of Belarusian State University in 1982 with distinction. He subsequently completed postgraduate study at the Institute of Technical Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus, defending his candidate dissertation in 1986 on interval ε-approximation algorithms for discrete extremal problems. He completed doctoral study at the same institution in 1996 and defended his Doctor of Science dissertation in 1999 on optimal schedules for servicing batches of demands. In 2004 he received the academic title of professor in informatics, control, and computer engineering.
Career
Kovalyov began his professional career in 1982 at the Institute of Technical Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus, where he worked as a researcher until 2002. His research developed around discrete optimization, approximation algorithms, scheduling theory, logistics, computational complexity, and related problems in applied mathematics. From 2002 to 2009 he was a professor at the Faculty of Economics of Belarusian State University, while also continuing his academic association with the university's Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics. From 2009 he served as Deputy General Director for Research of the United Institute of Informatics Problems of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and continued to hold a professorial position at Belarusian State University. His scientific work includes methods for constructing effective ε-approximation algorithms, theories of batch-service scheduling, logistics optimization methods, complexity analysis, and combinatorial algorithms for determining the linear structure of DNA molecules. His applied developments were implemented at the Kazan Aviation Production Association, the Orbita research and production organization in Dnipropetrovsk, and the Research Institute of Oncology and Medical Radiology in Minsk. He has published extensively in international journals and has supervised the defense of seven candidate dissertations.
