Ingemar Wikström was a Swedish lawyer whose career spanned public administration, the district courts, banking, and private legal practice in Sweden. He worked as legal counsel for Handelsbanken and later became a partner of Advokatfirman Carler, and he was a member of the Swedish Bar Association.
Background
Ingemar Wikström was born on August 22, 1938, in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Eskilstuna is an industrial city in Södermanland County, long known for metalworking and cutlery production.
He later lived and worked in Sweden, including in Stockholm and the Helsingborg area. He died in Helsingborg, a port city in Skåne on the Øresund strait, on November 16, 2018.
Education
Wikström studied law at Uppsala University and obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1964. Founded in 1477, Uppsala is Sweden's oldest university, and his law degree preceded the public service and legal career that followed.
Records also document his ability to speak English, German, French, and Swedish.
Career
Wikström began his professional career in Swedish public service with the Swedish Tax Administration in 1964, the government agency responsible for assessing and collecting taxes. From 1965 to 1968 he served at the District Court of Falun. Falun, the seat of Dalarna County in central Sweden, received its town charter in 1641 and is known for its copper mine, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2001. The present Falun District Court was formed by the 1971 reform that replaced earlier town and rural courts of first instance, so his service there took place before that reorganization.
From 1968 to 1970 he worked as legal counsel at Handelsbanken. The bank was founded in Stockholm in 1871 as Stockholms Handelsbank, and it took the name Svenska Handelsbanken after acquiring provincial banks in 1912 as it expanded beyond the capital. From 1970 to 1978 he was legal counsel and manager at Southeast-Banken.
He subsequently worked in private legal practice as a lawyer at Styrbjörn Gärde Advokatbyrå and later became a partner of Advokatfirman Carler. A business directory gives 1960 as the firm's founding year, while the present-day company Advokatfirman Carler AB was registered in 2018, and the firm's current practice emphasizes insolvency, bankruptcy, and reconstruction work. In the later part of his professional career he was associated with the Helsingborg office.
Wikström was a member of the Swedish Bar Association, the national organization for Swedish lawyers. Formed in 1887 as a voluntary association of academically trained lawyers, the Bar aimed to improve the administration of justice and raise the standing of the legal profession.
It gained official recognition when the Code of Judicial Procedure took effect in 1948. The professional title advokat is protected by law and reserved for members of the Association.
