1902-1904 studied under A.D. Kaslal’skiy and N.M. Danilin at Moscow Synodal College. From 1904 studied under Lyadov at the Court Singing Capella, St. Petersburg.
From 1907 taught singing at children’s homes and schools in St. Petersburg. From 1919 instructor, Music Department, People’s Commissariat of Education. From 1926 instructor, Leningrad Oblast Trade-Union Council.
1925-1939 lecturer, in choral work, Leningrad Conservatory. Founded workers’ choir groups and popularized new choral repertoire and Russian musical classics. Sponsored new forms of mass amateur musical activity.
1927 helped stage first Amateur Art Festival in Leningrad. Chief conductor and organizer at 10 such festivals, often involving as many as 100,000 participants.
