Richardson, Israel Bush was born on December 26, 1815 in Fairfax, Vermont, United States. Son of Israel Putnam and Susan (Holmes) Richardson.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1841.

Career

Brevet Second lieutenant 3d Infantry, United States Army, 1841, promoted 2d lt, 1841. In Seminole Indian War in Florida, 1841-1842. Commissioned First lieutenant, 1846.

At battles of Resaca-de-la-Palma, Monterrey, Cerro Gordo, Palo Alto, Vera Cruz and Mexico City in Mexican War. Brevetted captain and major, 1848. Promoted captain, 1851.

Resigned from army, 1855. Farmer in Michigan, 1855-1861. Appointed colonel 2d Michigan Volunteer Regiment, United States Army, 1861.

At Battle of Bull Run. Promoted brigadier general of Volunteers, 1861, major general, 1862. Mortally wounded in battle of Antietam, 1862.
