Graduated from the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 1960 as a cameraman.
Remarkable Ukrainian cameraman famous for his work on the film Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors, made in 1964 by the Armenian director, Sergei Paradzhanov. The film collected no fewer than 16 international prizes (most of them for the camera work). Not since Eisenstein’s triumphs had Russian cinema enjoyed such international esteem.
Unfortunately, after Paradzhanov’s conviction and imprisonment, the film was banned in the Soviet Union for some 10 years, but attracted a lot of attention in the West. Shot 2 films at Yalta Studios (Crimea). Directed and shot On the Eve of Ivan Kupala Day, based on Nikolai Gogol’s fantastic stories.
Works mainly at Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kiev. Other films include: A White Bird With a Black Spot, 1971, and To Dream and To Live, 1974.
