In 1833-1836 Leonty studied at Voronezh Theological School. In 1837 he graduated from Pavlovsk Theological School. In 1843 he graduated from Voronezh Theological Seminary (a fellow student of Ivan Savvich Nikitin). In 1847 he graduated from St. Petersburg Theological Academy.
In 1847 Leonty became a monk. In 1847-1852 he was an Inspector of Kiev Theological Seminary and in 1853-1856 - of Kiev Theological Academy. He was a Rector of Vladimir (1856-1857), Novgorod (1857-1859), St. Petersburg (1859-1860) Theological Seminaries. In 1860-1863 he was a Bishop of Revel, Vicar of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Since 1863 he became a Bishop of Podolsk, in 1873 - Archbishop of Podolsk, in 1874-1875 - Archbishop of Kherson. In 1875-1891 he headed the Kholmsk-Warsaw Diocese. Since 1891 he was the Metropolitan of Moscow.
