Vitaly was born in 1832 Terekhovo village, Nizhnedevitsk District, Voronezh Governorate, Russian Empire (now Terekhovo village, Nizhnedevitsk District, Voronezh, Russian Federation) in the family of the priest.
He graduated from Voronezh Theological seminary in 1854 and Kiev Theological Academy in 1865.
Vitaly was a teacher of Belgorod people's schools from 1854 to 1856. He was a priest in Storozhevoe village, Korotoyaksky District, Voronezh Governorate from 1856 to 1859; confessor of Voronezh Theological Seminary from 1859 to 1860.
In 1865 he took monastic vows. He was a professor of the Holy Writ, literature and Latin language from 1865 to 1869; inspector from 1869 to 1875, principal from 1875 to 1883 of Kiev Theological Seminary. He was an editor of the magazine «Rukovodstvo dlya selskih pastyrey», which was published at Kiev Theological Seminary from 1875 to 1883; Vitaly published church teachings and spiritual and moral articles in it.
