Constantine graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a B.A. degree in 1950. In 1951 he gained a M.A. degree. Later on, in 1953, he received a Ph.D. degree.
Constantine started his career as an instructor in history at Vincennes University, Vincennes, Indiana in 1953, and worked on this position until 1957. From 1957 until 1959 he worked as an associate professor of history at Indiana University South Bend. In 1959 he became a professor of history at Indiana State University, Terre Haute, and retired in 1989. Constantine was one of the founders of the Eugene V. Debs Foundation and served as Foundation Secretary from 1962 until 1983. From 1943 until 1946 he served for the U.S. Army in European theater.
Constantine was an adherent of the Democratic party.
