He was educated at Ilford County High School, Essex.
During World World War II, he was initially at the Air Ministry, 1939-1942, then served in the Royal Air Force, 1942-1946. After the War, he was at the Ministry of Supply, 1947-1959, serving as Private Secretary to the Minister of Supply, Duncan Sandys, 1952-1954. When the Ministry of Supply was disbanded in October 1959, he was moved to the War Office.
He next worked at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, 1960-1968, being the Authority"s Personnel Officer from 1965.
In 1968, he moved to the Greater London Council as Deputy Director of Establishments. He was Director of Establishments from 1972 to 1977, when he retired to Newbury in Berkshire to concentrate on gardening and walking.
He died peacefully on 19 January 2006, the day after his 83rd birthday.
