Career

Appointed from Pennsylvania, First lieutenant 16th Infantry, September 9, 1861. Promoted through grades to brigadier general vols., May 27, 1898. Honorary discharge from volunteer service, March 15, 1899.

Brigadier general United States of America, January 23, 1904. Retired at own request after 40 years’ service, January 24, 1904. Bvtd. captain, April 7, 1862, for battle of Shiloh, Tennessee.

Major, September 1, 1864, for Atlanta campaign. Instructor art of war and in department of infantry, at Infantry and Cavalry School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1887-1892. Home: Lebanon, Pa.
