From Academy Award-winning director James Cameron comes Avatar, the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people.
James Cameron is a Canadian film director, producer, screenwriter, engineer, and environmentalist. A science-fiction fan, he went on to produce and direct films including The Terminator, Aliens, and Avatar. He has received numerous Academy Awards and nominations for his often large-scale, expensive productions. His most noted work, 1997's Titanic, became the first film to earn more than $1 billion and landed 14 Academy Award nominations.
Background
Ethnicity:
James Cameron has Scottish, English, German, Northern Irish, and distant Dutch ancestry.
James Cameron was born on August 16, 1954, in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada, to Philip, an engineer, and a nurse-turned-housewife, Shirley Cameron. James Cameron is the eldest of five siblings. Cameron has been a resident of the United States since 1971. In 2004, he had put in an application for American citizenship but withdrew the same after George W. Bush came into power in his 2nd term. He still holds Canadian citizenship.
Education
James inherited his mother's passion for the arts, showing an early talent for drawing. A keen Spider-Man fan, he dreamed of becoming a comic-book artist when he grew up. He was also a great fan of science-fiction books. Cameron pursued his education at Stamford Collegiate School in Ontario. When James was in his mid-teens, his father was transferred to Orange County, California, where James attended Sonora High School and then moved to Brea Olinda High School.
Upon graduating from high school in 1973, the A-grade student had to decide between pursuing a career in the arts or sciences. He decided to study physics at California State University, Fullerton, but he left to follow his cinematic dreams.
After studying physics at California State University at Fullerton, Cameron worked at a series of jobs, including machinist and truck driver, before a viewing of Star Wars (1977) inspired him to try his hand at moviemaking. In 1978, James Cameron was inspired by Screenplay, a book by American screenwriter Syd Field, and wrote the script for a movie titled Xenogenesis. The script, which was shot in 35mm reel, was a ten-minute sci-fi film. The film helped him get a job with New World Pictures, a company run by famed B-movie director Roger Corman.
At New World, Cameron worked in a number of different roles, from art director on Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) to director on Piranha II: The Spawning (1981). In 1980 Cameron was hired as a production designer, and the following year he made his directorial debut with Piranha II: The Spawning. A flop at the box office, the movie encouraged Cameron to write his own material.
Cameron's fortunes took a major upturn in 1984 when he wrote and directed The Terminator (1984), an action thriller about a robot hitman that made actor Arnold Schwarzenegger a star and established Cameron as a bankable filmmaker. Cameron wrote the screenplay for Rambo: First Blood Part II. Released in 1985, the film was later edited by Sylvester Stallone. The movie, directed by George P. Cosmatos, proved to be extremely successful at the box-office.
The film became a critical and commercial hit and helped Cameron land his next project, the sequel to Ridley Scott's Alien (1979), which featured Sigourney Weaver as a female action hero in space. The movie was a hit, grossing millions of dollars. It also received several Academy Award nominations, including one for Weaver for Best Actress. The 1989 film The Abyss was Cameron's next movie, where he cast actors Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in lead roles. The movie, which boasted of real underwater shooting, was made on an expensive budget of $41 million.
With The Abyss, however, Cameron experienced a number of disappointments. The shoot for the film was grueling. Much of it was filmed in a huge underwater set, which took its toll on the cast and crew. After its release, critics and moviegoers were not impressed with the story of scuba divers who encounter aliens while recovering a United States Navy submarine. However, the film's visual effects were stunning and earned an Academy Award.
Working with his third wife, Kathryn Bigelow, Cameron helped produce her 1991 action flick, Point Break (1991). The couple's two-year relationship ended around the same time. But Cameron returned to form that year with another box-office hit, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The film earned more than $200 million and broke new ground with its impressive visual effects. Several years later he would marry one of the film's stars, Linda Hamilton.
In 1993, the director teamed up with special effects experts Scott Ross and Stan Winston to establish a firm named Digital Domain. The company, located in California, is known for creating spectacular special effects for movies. Mixing marital issues and espionage, Cameron wrote and directed True Lies (1994), starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film made it to No. 1 at the box office, grossed more than $378 million worldwide, and received an Oscar nod for its visual effects.
Although his films met with success at the box office, many viewers complained that the films lacked substance and relied too heavily on visual effects. In 1998 Cameron defied critics with Titanic, his screen adaptation of the doomed ocean liner’s 1912 maiden voyage. Star-crossed lovers (played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) trapped aboard the doomed Titanic ocean liner. To re-create one of the greatest disasters at sea in history, Cameron had a special studio built in Mexico, which featured a 17-million-gallon water tank and a 775-foot replica of the Titanic.
Made on a high budget of $200 million, it failed to generate enough revenue in the first few weeks. However, it soon impressed the audiences, becoming the highest-earning movie of all time, and grossing $600.8 million. It accumulated a whopping $2 billion worldwide. For his work on the film, Cameron took home three Oscars - for Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture.
Following Titanic’s unparalleled success, Cameron took a break from feature films. He created and co-produced Dark Angel (2000-2001), a science-fiction television series about a genetically altered female warrior with Jessica Alba in the lead. For the next few years, he also concentrated on making documentary films under his banner, Earthship Productions. The remarkable director made documentaries, such as Expedition: Bismarck, Ghosts of the Abyss, Aliens of the Deep, and The Lost Tomb of Jesus.
In 2009 Cameron returned to feature films with Avatar, a science-fiction thriller that was noted for its special effects. The film explores the conflict between American forces and the native population on another planet. In the film, Sam Worthington plays an American soldier who switches sides to help the Na'vi people and falls in love with one of them (played by Zoe Saldana). A major box-office success, it surpassed Titanic to become the highest-grossing movie in the world, earning more than $2.7 billion.
It also earned Cameron a number of accolades, including Golden Globe wins for Best Director and Best Motion Picture - Drama. For the Academy Awards, Avatar was nominated in nine categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. However, Cameron lost out on some of the night's biggest prizes to his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who won Best Director and Best Picture for The Hurt Locker. The success of Avatar has led Cameron to develop multiple sequels to the box-office hit, with Avatar 2 slated for a 2022 release.
In 2013, Cameron traveled across the country with his Deepsea Challenger submarine. He had developed the vessel to travel to the deepest spot on the planet, the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench. Cameron made several stops on this journey to talk with young people about his amazing voyage into the Challenger Deep. At the end of his historic trip, Cameron donated the Deepsea Challenger to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, in Massachusetts. His journey was the subject of the 2014 documentary Deepsea Challenge 3D.
He later co-wrote the screenplay for the sci-fi thriller Alita: Battle Angel (2019), an adaptation of a manga series. Written by Cameron, the film was directed by Robert Rodriguez. The film was financially successful, earning $404 million worldwide.

Religion
Cameron was brought a Protestant Christian but is now an atheist that has attempted to debunk Christianity from the roots. Cameron used to consider himself an agnostic, but has since called agnosticism "cowardly atheism."
Politics
Cameron is a supporter of the Democratic Party. Between 1992 and 2004, Cameron contributed $8,000 to Democratic candidates. In 2016, Cameron endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton for the 2016 United States presidential election.
Views
James Cameron has advocated for the resolution of environmental concerns, holding discussions with The United States Environmental Protection Agency to protect the oceans from oil spills. Cameron, along with his family, had adopted a vegan diet in 2012. Since then, he has been a proponent of veganism and considers choosing a plant-based diet the biggest contribution one can make in combating climate change.
Mixing his love of science and technology with environmental consciousness, since the early 2010s Cameron has been working to make his production company green, installing a massive array of solar panels at his studios in Manhattan Beach, California. He hopes to make the Avatar sequels the first completely solar-powered films in history.
Quotations:
"People call me a perfectionist, but I'm not. I'm a rightist. I do something until it's right, and then I move on to the next thing."
"You are never too big to pitch your own story. If I have to stand on a table and tap dance, I will do it."
"Sometimes the more fantastic an idea is the more you have to be very careful about how you design it."

Personality
Cameron has been an avid scuba diver since 1969, logging over 3000 hours underwater. In 1995, Cameron made 12 manned-submersible dives to the Titanic wreck in preparation for his feature film, using a new camera and lighting technology designed for that expedition. The expedition fueled his desire to turn to documentary filmmaking, and he formed Earthship Productions to develop films about ocean exploration and conservation.
Cameron nearly died during the filming of The Abyss, when while shooting an underwater scene he ran out of the air and tried to make it to the surface. A safety diver gave Cameron a malfunctioning regulator, which pushed water into Cameron's lungs; the director had to punch the diver to free himself and made it to the surface. There he fired the diver and the assistant director whose job it was to monitor the air levels.

Connections
James’s first high-profile relationship was with actress Sharon Williams in 1977. The couple got married on February 14, 1978, and stayed together for around 6 years till 1984. Their divorce was finalized in July 1984. Film producer Gale Anne Hurd began a relationship with the director in 1984. She was the producer of the hugely-successful The Terminator (1984) which was directed by Cameron. They got married in 1985 but 4 years later were headed down for divorce. They were officially separated in 1989. In 1988, James fell for director Kathryn Bigelow. A year later, he got married for the third time on August 17, 1989. Their relationship deteriorated soon after and by November 1991, the couple had terminated their marriage.
Cameron and actress Linda Hamilton, who starred in The Terminator films as Sarah Connor, started a relationship close on the heels of his divorce from Kathryn Bigelow. She moved in with him in 1991 and gave birth to their first (and only) child, a girl named Josephine Archer Cameron in 1993. After dating for around 6 years, James and Linda got hitched on July 26, 1997. Hamilton spoke about her tumultuous time with Cameron and considered the Titanic (1997) phase, the last straw in their crumbling marriage. It was also at this time that Cameron began a relationship with Suzy Amis, an actress in Titanic. Hamilton filed for divorce in March 1998, days after Cameron’s Oscar win. She received $50 million in her divorce settlement which was finalized in 1999.
His fourth wife is an American actress and environmentalist Suzy Amis, who played the role of Lizzy Calvert in Cameron’s directorial venture Titanic. Their affair began in 1998 and, after his divorce was finalized, the two got married on June 4, 2000. The couple has 3 children together - daughter Claire Cameron, son Quinn Cameron, and daughter Elizabeth Rose Cameron.
The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron
With the release of Avatar in December 2009, James Cameron cements his reputation as the king of sci-fi and blockbuster filmmaking. It’s a distinction he’s long been building, through a directing career that includes such cinematic landmarks as The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, and the highest-grossing movie of all time, Titanic.
