This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

historian Missionary statistician
James Shepard Dennis was born on December 15, 1842 in Newark, New Jersey, United States. He was the son of Alfred Lewis Dennis, an important and wealthy businessman of Newark, New Jersey, United States and Eliza (Shepard) Dennis.
His boyhood was surrounded with influences of culture and earnest religion. He graduated with the degree of B. A. from Princeton in 1863, and after a year’s study of law at Harvard entered Princeton Theological Seminary, graduating in 1867.
Early in 1869 Dennis arrived in Syria as a missionary of the American Board. A year later, when the mission was taken over by the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, he joined the service of this board, with which he was connected all his life. For four years he was a field missionary in Sidon and Zahleh. It is remembered as characteristic that since the sound of his name has an unpleasant sense in Arabic he dropped its first letter, and was called by the Syrians “Ennis, ” meaning “courteous. ”
From 1873 to 1891 he was professor in the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Beirut. His command of Arabic led him into writing texts for missionary teaching, of which the most important were Evidences of Christianity (1877), Biblical Interpretation (1880), and Christian Theology in two volumes (1882 - 83).
Because of business responsibilities and family circumstances in 1892 he resigned his missionary appointment. He had determined to serve the missionary cause by literary work, the way to which was opened by inherited wealth.
Returning to America he lived in New York City and Montclair, New Jersey. Soon there came to him, in connection with lectures given in Princeton Seminary, the idea of a thorough presentation of the social effects of Protestant missions on non-Christian peoples. He sought information on a large scale from over three hundred missionaries in all parts of the field. An immense correspondence resulted, giving him a unique acquaintance with missionaries and their work, and bringing him a flood of material. The issue was three large abundantly documented volumes on Christian Missions and Social Progress (1897, 1899, 1906). While this book has defects natural to work which broke much new ground, as a contribution to the science of missions it has not been surpassed in America.
Beside the older individualistic proselytizing conceptions it established the idea of missions as an enterprise releasing transforming forces into the common life of peoples. While the book was in preparation, portions formed the material for lectures at several theological seminaries. As a “statistical supplement” to this book, Dennis published his Centennial Survey of Christian Missions (1902), reporting all Protestant missionary operations which were being maintained at the close of the nineteenth century and exhibiting with descriptions and statistics their conditions and achievements in all forms of work—“the most comprehensive and authoritative collection of missionary statistics which had ever been made” (R. E. Speer). Some of this material was presented by Dennis to the Ecumenical Missionary Conference in New York in 1900. In the preparations for this and also for the World Missionary Conference at Edinburgh in 1910 he took active part. For the Edinburgh Conference he did important work in improving methods of missionary statistics, and was editor of the statistical section of its Statistical Atlas of Christian Missions. In the World Atlas of Christian Missions (1911), he provided a directory of missionary societies, enrolling all Protestant missionary organizations in the world.
Dennis wrote many articles for missionary periodicals and papers for missionary meetings, of which some were collected in The New Horoscope of Missions (1908) and The Modern Call of Missions (1913).
He spent much money in preparing and publishing his books, and took no financial returns. After his return from Syria he maintained active connection with missionary work, as honorary secretary of the Presbyterian Board, giving large service, and as a member of the Board from 1904 till his death.

Seldom making public appearances, Shepard greatly impressed and attracted those who knew him by a singular grace and loftiness of character.
Dennis married Mary Elizabeth in Newark, June 26, 1872, daughter of James B. Pinneo.
