In 1975 James received a Diploma in Primary Teaching at the Griffith University. Then he got Bachelor of Environmental Science at the University of Queensland in 1981. Finally, he earned Graduate Diplomas in Computer Education and Teacher Librarianship at the Queensland University of Technology.
After the University James became a teacher and then a Teacher Librarian and moved around from school to school. His first book, "Crossfire", was published in 1992 and he continues to publish.
Since 1983 James held the position of a teacher and librarian at primary school at the Marist College Ashgrove, an all-boys school in Brisbane. In 1998 he resigned from teaching and now writes full-time in a cabin in his backyard.
On April 4, 1983 James married a teacher and librarian Kate Hickey, with whom he gave birth to three children: Siobhan, Julia, and Bede Moloney.
