James Oliver was born on the 17th of January, 1956 in Plymouth, United Kingdom; the son of Thomas Gabriel and Mary Anne (McKearney) Oliver.
James Oliver attended Exeter College from 1973 to 1976 and City University in London from 1976 to 1977. In 1982 he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Plymouth Polytechnic University.
James Oliver began his career at British Gas in London where he served as intern from 1980 to 1981. Four years later he began working for Energy Conscious Design Partnership as a consultant. He also was Director of A Company of Writers from 1988 to 1990. In 1991 he became a principal for James A. Oliver Consulting. He founded the World Editorial Network in 1997.
His publication The Bering Strait Crossing: A 21st-century frontier was released worldwide in 2006. In 2007, James was invited by the Russian Academy of Sciences to review the Beringia concept at the World Link conference in Moscow. From 2007-2009, he was based on the Ile Saint Louis in Paris, while working as a Writer-Editor for EUROCONTROL on the Single European Sky (SES) project - with inputs for FP6 and FP7 European aviation research and also ASD-Europe (Brussels).
On his return to England, he developed the script for The Pamphleteers: The Birth of Journalism (2010), which investigates the emergence of the periodical press as the fourth estate on a timeline from Gutenberg to the French Revolution, with vignettes on Daniel Defoe, Tom Paine and others. Strait of Gibraltar: Non Plus Ultra is the second part of the trilogy Where Continents Meet.
He is also the author of A Footprint in the Sand, an epic political comedy inspired by a 'special assignment' at the end of the Cold War, and The Anarchist's Arms - a stage play set in near-future London.
James Oliver's writings and publications are translated into many languages and well-known all over the world. His review of the Beringia concept at the World Link conference in Moscow, formed the basis for a Discovery Channel documentary first broadcast in 2009. In 2010, the Beringia link concept was awarded the Grand Prix for innovation at the World Expo in Shanghai. These efforts are now reflected by China's Polar Silk Road (focused on the North East Passage).
