Leys, James Farquharson was born on December 26, 1867 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of James F. and Rachel (West) Leys.

Education

Doctor of Medicine University of Pennsylvania, 1890.

Career

Appointed assistant surgeon United States Navy, 1893. Promoted through grades to rear admiral and retired for age, January 1, 1932, with advancement to vice admiral for service on construction of Panama Canal, 1907-1910, being the first officer of any staff corps in the Navy to attain that rank.

Served afloat on United States Ship Chicago, Alliance, Helena, Vesuvius, Essex, New York and Flagship Wyoming (aide and fleet surgeon).
