(At a time when astonishing medical advances appear in the...)
At a time when astonishing medical advances appear in the media almost daily, access to even the most routine health care and satisfactory doctor-patient relationships is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Moreover, the rapidly growing population of seniors does not want to settle for just getting old—seniors want to be physically and emotionally healthy, active, and secure as they age. Written by an earlier pioneer in the field of heart transplant research, "What Every Senior Needs to Know About Health Care" is a guide to the medical, financial, and social issues of today’s complex American health care system, specifically for people age 50 and older. The guide includes information on: 1. Changes in health insurance, Medicare, Medigap, HMOs, and the quality of medical care; 2. The promises and dangers of medications; 3. The aging process and how treatments and medications are influenced by aging; 4. The ten leading causes of death and disability for seniors; 5. Health maintenance strategies involving nutrition, fitness, and the avoidance of risk factors; and 6. Mental and social health, elder abuse, retirement, and end-of-life issues. "What Every Senior Needs to Know About Health Care" is an indispensable resource for both older Americans and those with aging relatives.

(Knowledge of what causes cardiovascular diseases has prog...)
Knowledge of what causes cardiovascular diseases has progressed at a pace that challenges not only the student, but the physician and the research scientist. And while there is scientific merit in discovering the etiology of any disease, the ultimate goal is to apply what we learn to the treatment and possibly to the prevention of the diseases being studied. In this volume, the authors propose to bring together what is understood about the causes and prevention of cardiovascular diseases in individuals, families and societies. Their first theme, variations of which occur throughout the work, is that cardiovascular diseases are familial. The volume also recognizes that genetic factors for most cardiovascular diseases interact in important, if not critical, ways with the environment. Epidemiology and the genetic-environmental interaction are of major consequence. The authors' goal is as much to inspire stimulating questions as to provide a concise resource of current information.
