Jan Goldberg is a professional writer and credentialed teacher from Glenview, Illinois, United States. She has authored 55 books and more than 800 articles on education and career development.
Background
Jan Goldberg was born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She is daughter of Sam and Sylvia (Tulsky) Lefkovitz.
Goldberg came to a love of reading early. Visits to the book bindery where her grandfather worked “produced a magic combination of sights and smells” that Goldberg commented to SATA have remained vivid in her memory even as an adult. “Childhood was filled with composing poems and stories, reading books, and playing library,” the author also remembered.
Education
School newspapers in both elementary and high school provided Jan Goldberg with an outlet for her writing, and after she enrolled at Roosevelt University, her part-time job at the school’s College of Business Administration further honed her talent for clear, concise prose. She got a Bachelor of Arts degree at Roosevelt University in elementary education.
Jan Goldberg is a nonfiction writer who specializes in helping young job-seekers combine their unique skills and personality types into a rewarding job or career. Although trained as an educator, Goldberg decided instead to embark upon a career as a freelance journalist, and through her efforts to successfully establish her own career she realized the need for interesting, engaging books on the subject of career development. Her prolific output, which includes such books as Careers for Competitive Spirits and Other Peak Performers, Great Jobs for Computer Science Majors, Opportunities in Horticulture Careers, and Careers for Homebodies and Other Independent Souls, attests to Goldberg’s creative approach to one of a young adult’s most important concerns: What do I want to be when I grow up? In a review of Great Jobs for Computer Science Majors in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, writer Jim Clarkson praised the book as “an excellent resource... More than just a book about career paths, Goldberg provides a wealth of information about selfassessment and job search.”
Graduating from college with a degree in elementary education, Goldberg eventually embarked on a career as a freelance writer and contributed a number of articles about career development to magazines. Soon she was working with educational publishers such as Scott Foresman and Addison-Wesley, while her magazine submissions had expanded to feature articles in such periodicals as Parenting Magazine and Complete Woman. By 2000 Goldberg could list over four hundred published articles to her credit.
In addition to her work for magazines, Goldberg joined with vocational publisher VGM Career Horizons to produce nonfiction books focusing on her area of expertise: the job search. In her 1995 work Careers in Journalism, she speaks with authority on the different directions available to writers - technical writers, business writers, electronic media writers, editors, freelance journalists, etc. - and discusses each of these fields in detail. In addition to noting salary ranges, job descriptions, and industry overviews, Goldberg also includes interviews with journalism professionals, all of which combine to provide “some good practical advice about getting started” in a journalism career, according to Voice of Youth Advocates contributor Christine Miller. Comparing Careers in Journalism with other, more narrowly focused vocational guidebooks on the same subject, Miller dubbed Goldberg’s work “no ordinary so-you-want-to-be-a-reporter book.” Related books by Goldberg include 1997’s Real People Working in Communications, a volume in VGM’s “On the Job” series that Kliatt reviewer Paula Rohrlick called “Useful for all [library] career collections.”
While some of Goldberg’s career guides take a traditional approach, her contributions to the “Careers for You” series published by VGM Career Horizons are by contrast unique. With titles like Careers for Color Connoisseurs and Other Visual Types, Careers for Class Clowns and Other Engaging Types, and Careers for Courageous People and Other Adventurous Types, Goldberg provides a “good starting place for students and others who are just starting to think about what kind of work they’d like to do,” according to Rohrlick in another Kliatt review. In Careers for Class Clowns, readers are encouraged to examine their interests before making a career choice, and the comedic-inclined are presented with such vocational options as comedian, juggler, magic and other performance, while Careers for Courageous People tempts risk-takers with everything from an astronaut to the beekeeper to a law enforcement officer. Goldberg’s approach to career choices in her “Careers for You” titles still offer the same factual detail with regard to job outlook, job description, and working conditions as her more traditional books, but she also “convey[s] enthusiastically the possibilities that exist” in the modem workplace, in the Rohrlick’s opinion.
In addition to building her own career in the field of vocational self-help publishing, Goldberg has combined her talent for writing with her love of teaching by designing presentations that provide her audience with the nuts and bolts of making a go of a career in freelance writing in both magazines and book-length nonfiction. Besides working with adult groups, she also organizes and presents workshops for young adults and children who want help developing their personal reading and writing skills. Furthermore, her work with co-author Miriam Adderholdt of the highly praised Perfectionism: What’s Bad about Being Too Good? helps today’s over-achieving teens break the cycle of perfectionism that often blocks efforts to pursue long-term goals such as developing new skills.
Jan Goldberg is a contributor to books published by Publications International (Lincolnwood), including Sister, 1999. Grandmother, 1999, and Friend, 1999; reviser for Horizon in My Pocket, Camp Fire Boys and Girls (Kansas City).
She is also a contributor to textbooks, teacher’s manuals, and other educational publications for Scott Foresman, Addison-Wesley, and General Learning Corporation. Con-tributor to periodicals, including Career World, American Careers, Parenting, Bloomsbury Review, Correspondent, Friendly Exchange, and Successful Student.
