Maria Gołaszewska was born on June 26, 1926, in Kurzelów, Poland. She was a daughter of Czeslaw and Maria (Laszczyk) Naksianowicz.
Maria Gołaszewska attended the Jagiellonian University where she received a Master of Arts degree in 1950. She also studied at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1956.
Maria Gołaszewska started her career as an assistant lecturer at the Jagiellonian University in 1957. In 1963, she was appointed an assistant professor and in 1964 she became a full professor of philosophy. She held this post until her retirement in 1996. Gołaszewska helped to establish the Department of Aesthetics at the Jagiellonian University in 1981. She organized annual nationwide aesthetic seminars and international aesthetic conferences.
Maria Gołaszewska published her first book Twórczość a osobowość twórcy. Analiza procesu twórczego in 1958. Later she wrote such books as Kultura estetyczna and Estetyka rzeczywistości. She wrote over 20 books and about 160 scientific articles. She also was an editor of the Small Aesthetics Library and Estetyka w świata.
Maria Gołaszewska's research interests include aesthetics, general axiology and philosophical anthropology. She studied the synthesis of theoretical thinking as well as sensual and internal experience. Gołaszewska made a significant contribution to theories of aesthetic values.
Gołaszewska has elaborated a concept of the aesthetic situation as constituted by the artist, the work of art, the perceiver and aesthetic value and a concept of aesthetic value regarded as the expression of extra-rational attitudes towards the world. In some of her later work, she has focused on the specific place of knowledge in aesthetic culture.
Maria Gołaszewska was a member of the Polish Philosophical Society and British Society of Aesthetics.
Maria Gołaszewska married Tadeusz Golaszewski on September 20, 1947.
