Jenifer Estess studied at New York University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama in 1984.
Jenifer Estess began her career as an actress. She was a co-founder in 1986 and producing director until 1993 of the Naked Angels, theatre company, in New York City, New York, United States. She also worked at Baker Winokur Ryder public relations and helped found the Nantucket Film Festival and the New York Women’s Film Festival. Jenifer was a co-founder and chief executive officer of Project A.L.S. Estess served as a co-executive producer of a television film “Jennifer” CBS in 2001, where she appeared as herself in the film Chelsea Walls.
Although Estess died in 2003, she narrated her story to her sister, Valerie Estes, and “Tales from the Bed: On Living, Dying, and Having It All” was published posthumously in 2004. Estess's memoir focuses primarily on how Lou Gehrig's disease changed her life, but it also includes reflections on her early family life, including her parents' divorce and the strong bond she had with her sisters.
Jenifer Estess was a co-founder of the Naked Angels theatre company in Manhattan. She also helped found the Nantucket Film Festival and the New York Women's Film Festival.
After discovering that she had A.L.S. (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Estess, her sisters and friends set up Project A.L.S. and raised more than $17 million, bringing together scientists to search for a cure. Jenifer gave testimony before a Senate subcommittee with Christopher Reeve in favor of federal funding for stem cell research in 2000.
HBO showed a documentary on Jenifer's life, “Three Sisters: Searching for a Cure,” in 2004.
