Mr. Edelstein was born on July 31, 1924, in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. He was a son of Joseph and Irene (Schwartz) Edelstein.
Jerome Edelstein obtained Bachelor of Arts (cum laude) from Johns Hopkins University in 1947. He was a postgraduate of Johns Hopkins University, 1947-1949. In 1953 he received his Master of Library Science from University of Michigan.
During the period of 1949-1950 Mr. Edelstein was an Italian Government fellow, Fulbright grantee, U. Florence, Italy. He worked as at a reference librarian rare book division, Library of Congress, 1955-1962. Between 1962 and 1964 Mr. Edelstein held the post of a bibliographer of Medieval and Renaissance studies at University of California, Los Angeles.
From 1966 till 1972 Jerome Edelstein served as a humanities bibliographer and lecturer bibliography at University of California, Los Angeles. He was a chief librarian at National Gallery Art, Washington, from 1972 to 1986. Mr. Edelstein acted as an assistant director and senior bibliographer at Getty Center for History of Art and Humanities, Santa Monica, California, between 1986 and 1994.
In 1994-1996 he was appointed distinguished bibliographer-in-residence John Carter Brown Library., Brown U., Providence. From 1994 till 1996 Jerome Edelstein served as an adjunct professor at the department of modern culture and media, Brown University, Providence. Between 1975 and 1983 Lecturer rare book librarianship Catholic University of America, Washington.
Along with contributing articles to literary journals and anthologies, Mr. Edelstein also wrote several books. His first, A Bibliographical Checklist of the Writings of Thornton Wilder, was published in 1959. He followed this with The Library of Don Cameron Allen and Wallace Stevens: A Descriptive Bibliography.
