Nikolai Ivanovich graduated from the Kursk Uyezd School and the 4th-grade Gymnasium. In 1827, he entered the Nizhyn Lyceum of knyaz A. A. Bezborodko. After graduating from a Lyceum with a candidate's degree (1830), he attended lectures at Moscow University for some time, but due to lack of funds, he was forced to enter the Moscow practical Academy as a lecturer of History and Geography.
When Nikolai Ivanovich worked at the Academy since 1836 he taught subaltern officers' children at the Institute at the Moscow Educational Home. Since 1837 Nikolai Ivanovich worked in Aleksandrovsk Women's School. Since 1840 he worked in the third Moscow Gymnasium, where he was transferred to Noble Institute, where he served until 1848. Moreover, in 1844-1848 he taught literature in an orphanage and Palace architectural school. He had many classes in private homes and boarding houses.
