Jerry S. Wiggins was born on May 15, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States.
Wiggins graduated from American University with a bachelor's degree in 1952 and received his doctorate from Indiana University—Bloomington in 1956.
Wiggins started his career, as a clinical psychologist in 1953. He first worked at Veterans Administration Hospital in Indianapolis for almost one year, then at Psychological Clinic at Indiana University—Bloomington and Veterans Administration Mental Hygiene Clinic till 1954. The next year, he went to Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital, where he held the same position also for one year.
Wiggins started his academic career as an assistant professor of psychology and clinical psychologist at Rochester University in 1956, and then he continued teaching at Stanford University till 1962. That year, he went to the University of Illinois, where he began as an associate professor and then became a professor of psychology there.
From 1972 and till his retirement in 1996, Wiggins worked as a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia. Since 1996, he held the position of professor emeritus and was also a National Research Council senior associate since 1997.
Jerry S. Wiggins was an expertise clinical psychologist best known for developing scales to assess the traits in the circumplex model, writing and editing texts on personality theory and psychometrics and for developing measures of interpersonal behaviour. Wiggins was also one of the most prominent advocates of circular representations of personality and he formalized the circular model (also called circumplex model) with modern statistical techniques. He was the author of such works on psychology as The Psychology of Personality, Personality and Prediction: Principles of Personality Assessment, Principles of Personality, The Interpersonal Adjective Scales: Professional Manual, The Five-Factor Model of Personality: Theoretical Perspectives as well as many others.
In 2004, the journal Multivariate Behavioral Research published a special edition entitled ‘Personality Topics in Honor of Jerry S. Wiggins’ which was guest edited by Lewis R Goldberg. As well as including references to Dr Wiggins' circumplex models it made particular reference to his contributions to the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). His work was also mentioned following his death in the newsletter for the professional society he helped found, the Society for Interpersonal Theory and Research.
